A passport entitles the holder to travel to and from different countries and also attests to the identity and citizenship of the holder. Countries like the USA and UAE have one of the most powerful passports, granting access to a wide range of countries around the globe.
A passport running out of pages or about to get expired would have to be renewed by the holder and quite contrary to popular belief, this process is actually not that complicated.

And no, you do not have to return to India in order to get your passport renewed. Renewals can be done from within the United States itself.

Indian Passport renewal in USA-

Indian Passport renewal in USA can be done through the postal service. Applications need to submitted to the relevant consulates in the United States, varying by state. One can apply for a passport renewal on the VHS website here.

The first step would be to select the type of service (normal in this case) and select passport going to expire/expired- 10 years validity. After this, the next step would be to fill in all the relevant fields wherever applicable and proceed to the next step where a fee of $96.15 is required to be paid. The fee includes ICWF Fee, Passport Fee, and VFS Service Fee.

Post this, the next step would be to input all necessary information such as government reference number, booklet type, passport number, courier service, etc. It is recommended to use the VFS courier service, which costs $30 for 2-way shipping. After entering filling all the necessary fields, the application needs to be submitted.

Passport renewal fee-

The total passport renewal fee (in the case of a normal booklet) would be $127.20.

Documents required to renew a passport-

  • Completed application form
  • Current passport
  • Copy of the first five pages and last two pages of passport
  • Three passport-sized photographs
  • Notarized copy of US driving license
  • Notarized copy of I-94
  • Notarized copy of H1B work authorization
  • Notarized copy of visa stamp on passport
  • Notarized copy of degree
  • Notarized copy of marriage certificate

Processing Time

Indian passport renewals will take 3-6 weeks if the last passport was issued in India.

A new passport can be issued in 10 days if your last passport was issued by the Indian Embassy in the USA.
