How long does it take to get a UAE passport?

An Emirati passport is regarded as one of the best passports around the world, granting passport holders access to 178 countries. Being a global financial hub, the UAE naturally sees an influx of people in the form of students, businessmen, investors, employees, etc, due to which the UAE receives a lot of passport applications. However, this process can be confusing for a lot of people leaving them with questions like- “How long does it take to get your passport?” “How long is a passport good for?” “Passport processing time” “How long does it take to get an expedited passport?”, etc. In this article, we answer all these questions and provide useful information about the UAE passport.

UAE nationals can apply for a new passport, renew an expired passport or get a replacement for their damaged or lost passports through the following channels-

New Passport-

  • General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs/Citizenship Departments (GDRFA)

  • Online through the UAE citizenship portal

Passport Renewals-

  • Passport renewals can be done on an emergency basis at the Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah airports.

  • Passport Replacements-

    Passport Replacements can be done at a UAE embassy in the country you are in. The UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation will issue an emergency passport, having a validity of six months from the date of issuance.

How long is a passport good for?

A passport is generally valid for a period of 5 years from the date of issuance or until all the pages have been fully used up, earlier of the two. Once a passport has expired, a new passport needs to be applied for.

Documents Required for applying for a UAE passport-

  • Original and a copy of the Emirates ID card
  • Original and a copy of the family book
  • A recent photo.

In addition to these documents, a copy of the old passport needs to be submitted in the case of passport renewals.

New passport in lieu of Loss of passport- For 36 pages booklet- AED 570.

Damaged Passport- For 36 pages booklet - AED 570.

Registration of Birth/ Issue of Birth certificate and passport for a child born in UAE- For registration of birth - AED 95, Passport fees - AED 171.
